The different regions of the country provide for diverse tourist attractions. The southern region of the country is where the mountains of the Alps are found. The regions highest point is Zugspitze Mountain at 2,962 meters above the sea level. This is also the region where glaciers are found. The central region of the country is full of forested highlands with the northern region being a lowland region traversed by many rivers with the major ones being Danube, Elbe and Rhine. Most regions of the country experience temperate type of climate.
German cities are probably the main attractions for many tourists visiting the country. The new unified city of Berlin, which is the country’s capital city, remains the most visited city in the country. Apart from its past history, the city features elegant clubs, galleries, restaurants and shops. The 2,000 year old city of Cologne is famous for its archeological sites, a huge cathedral and Romanesque churches. While Hamburg City is the country’s richest city full with nightclubs and casinos, Munich is probably the beautiful city of all. Not only is it the gateway to the Alps; it is also home to the famous Oktoberfest.
Apart from its cities, holidays in this country are never complete with a visit to some of its national parks and zoos. The country has fourteen national parks including Jasmund National Park, Wadden Sea National Park and Bavarian Forest National Park among other national parks. This is in addition to over ten Biosphere Reserves and over ninety nature parks. Germany also has the largest number of zoos and animal parks in the world with the number of those officially registered standing at four hundred. Of these, Berlin Zoo opened in 1844 is the oldest most popular and frequented by millions of tourists annually.
One thing that tourists to Germany do appreciate is quality and variety of accommodation facilities available. Germany does not restrict visitors to specific accommodation facilities. Apart from the many international hotel chains that have presence in German cities, tourists have the option of putting up at local hotels that are otherwise very affordable. Furthermore, B & Bs and hostels are also available. Camping is very popular in the country and many tourists do choose to camp. Indeed, the country boasts of thousands of camping sites strategically located near major tourist attractions.
There are simply many restaurants in Germany that offer different cuisine for the benefit of both locals and tourists. A wide range of flavors are available including German, Japanese, Thai, Polish, Spanish, Italian, Indian, Greek and Turkish. A range of drinks are also available and served in the restaurants. These include beer, cidar, Apfelschorle (the national drink), coffee, tea, wine and spirits.
German is a well developed nation, something that is very evident in its transport systems. Tourists who intend to visit many locations do opt to travel by plane in which case various airlines including Lufthansa, Air Berlin, OLT, InterSky and Cirrus Airlines connect many other cities. Germany also boats of having a fast, efficient and affordable train service that is available in most parts of the country. Apart from buses that provide day and night passenger service, tourists also have the option of renting cars from the many car rental companies. The country has an extensive paved road network and driving across the country is usually a memorable experience.
